WPC Youth Committee: Designing A Sustainable Future
Young people bring to their jobs qualities such as active thinking, sensitivity to new issues and their powerful innovative potential. These qualities are vitally important to the future of the petroleum industry.
The World Petroleum Council, aware of the importance of providing young professionals and students with the significant role they deserve, promoted the 1st Youth Forum. This was the first event in which young people played a leading role in the WPC’s 75-year history.
The event was held in Beijing from 17-20 October 2004 with “Youth and Innovation – the Future of the Petroleum Industry” as its theme. The Forum was an overwhelming success and won widespread acclaim from its participants. Since then, the role of young professionals and students, and laying the foundations for international exchange and future cooperation have been two of the most important topics for the World Petroleum Council.
On the 8th and 9th of January 2007, 17 members chosen by the WPC’s National Committees met in Madrid to create the World Petroleum Council’s WPC Youth Committee, basing their organisation on the following principles:
- Youth engaged in the petroleum industry to design a sustainable future
- To create and nurture a collaborative, global forum for young people to be heard
- To promote a realistic image of the petroleum industry, its challenges and opportunities
- To bridge the generation gap through mentorship networks
- Social responsibility
- Environmental stewardship
- Technological innovation
- Long term thinking
The Committee is playing a crucial role by putting together the wide range of youth activities which make up the Youth Programme.
The 19th World Petroleum Congress Youth Programme:
For the first time in the history of the WPC, young professionals and students who are interested in actively participating in the oil and gas industry have found a space in which they were able to express their opinions, meet other professionals from the industry, and share their point of view with both senior representatives of the petroleum sector and top executives from the world’s leading oil and gas companies.
This Youth Programme, sponsored by Nexen, also provided a platform for young people from every part of the world to demonstrate their skills, and created an opportunity for petroleum industry management to find and recruit the industry professionals of the future. All of these activities provided a perfect opportunity for Young People to stand out and be recognised for what they are, the future of the oil and gas industry.
